Most Nixie clocks use the IN-14, which has no five, so they show an upside-down “2” instead. Here every digit is the right one.

The tubes are new old stock from Soviet factories, never used. They stopped being made decades ago, and every year there are fewer of them. Each one is tested before it goes into a clock. They sit in sockets, so a tube can be changed by hand, with no soldering.

The case

One block of solid walnut with its edges rounded. Each tube stands in a brass ring, and small brass posts stand between the pairs. Every case is cut from its own piece of walnut, so the grain on your clock will differ from the photos.

Living with it

A blue backlight sits under the tubes and lights them from below. It can be switched off, but its colour does not change. Three buttons on the back set the time, the alarm and 12 or 24-hour display. A backup battery keeps the time through a power cut. Between 01:00 and 04:00 the clock runs through every digit so the tubes wear evenly, and from 22:00 to 07:00 the backlight rests.

Built by hand in Ukraine and covered for twelve months: if a tube fails inside that year, the replacement is free.
